This Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix makes the richest, creamiest hot chocolate you'll ever have from a mix. Keep a batch of this made for the cold winter months or fill some hot cocoa bombs with it!
I just love a big mug of steaming hot, hot chocolate, curled up under my warm covers watching my shows. Is it just me or is holding a hot mug of anything just so soothing and relaxing? I'm somewhat of a hot chocolate connoisseur, so I know my stuff. And I'm telling you, this homemade hot cocoa mix makes the richest, creamiest hot chocolate you'll ever have!
Why you'll love this recipe
- You can make this homemade hot cocoa mix and store it for 6+months! As long as your ingredients are within their expiration date, then that is how long this mix will be good for, stored properly of course!
- The addition of white chocolate in this mix gives it such a creamy taste.
- You can prepare hot cocoa using this homemade hot cocoa mix using either water or milk since there is milk powder in the recipe.
This hot cocoa mix tastes 10x better than the mixes from the store because there is no chemical-ish after-taste. I was at my grandmother's house the other day and I was FREEZING so she made me a cup of hot cocoa using the packaged powder (mind you, those used to be my favorite) and it tastes so different to me now! I'm never turning back. I bet you won't either after tasting your first mug of this gloriously creamy, chocolatey drink.
Make a batch of this for the cold winter months ahead, you won't be sorry you did!
Or if you're like me.. you'll have it on hand all year long to curb your hot chocolate cravings!

I am going to be finding out how good this recipe is tomorrow, when I actually make the cocoa, but tonight I have been trying to make the mix. I have a great blender and food processor, but the chips just are not grinding up. Very disappointing, I really hope that they will melt in the drink, but now I am worried that the ratios will be off. Any suggestions??? Thank you!

It's okay! I am so sorry for the delayed response! They are supposed to be like that š They don't completely turn to powder and will melt in the drink.

Can you use hot water instead
Jessica says
Yes, absolutely.

Hello, just found this recipe when I was searching to make my first homemade batch. Iām wanting to make some for my sons teacher who loves peppermint hot chocolate. I would use peppermint oil I think, any idea when will be best to add that and how much I should start with? Thank you!!
Jessica says
I would substitute peppermint chips instead. Or maybe even candy canes pulsed fine.

I do one similar but I don't add the white chocolate chips. Instead I use instant chocolate pudding mix to create a similar mouth feel and I add a non dairy creamer too. I am going to try the white chocolate too.

Been looking for a good recipe. Most recipes have powdered milk but you add water when mixing. This one has the powdered milk but you mix with milk again. Just doesn't make sense to me. Can you tell me is this an error on your part?
Jessica says
You can add water or milk, I prefer adding milk but either way is fine since there is powdered milk in the recipe.

My daughter wants to make this for gifts for all her gymnast friends...24 of them!
I am wondering if we could mix everything except the white chips. Put the mix in a jar, top with white chips. It would have a layered look. Add a candy cane on the outside of the jar with twine.
Would the chips melt in the hot drink?
Jessica says
Sure, I think that would work! Sounds like an adorable idea. š

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! I've recently been craving hot cocoa. I had some Ghirardelli double chocolate cocoa powder, but I ran out. I had also just read about the health properties of cacao powder--it's ground cacao nibs and is the closest product of the cacao tree. It tastes just like cocoa powder. I've been wanting to copy the Ghirardelli double chocolate cocoa powder, and your instructions to process the cocoa mix in the food processor is exactly what I needed to make my own recipe.
I found organic cacao powder in the vitamin and supplement section in my local Harris Teeter--$6 for a huge bag. It tastes just like good quality cocoa powder. Except it's so much better for you. I'm also going to use bittersweet chocolate chips. Thanks again for giving me the inspiration I needed.
PS I also add a dollop of marshmallow creme to make my hot cocoa completely amazing. The creme melts into the cocoa so much better than the regular store bought marshmallows. Marshmallow creme is also very easy to make--sugar syrup and gelatin boiled together then whipped in a stand mixer (it takes 10-15 minutes to whip up, so a hand held mixer wouldn't work.) Throw a towel over the top of the mixing bowl to keep the hot syrup from splattering all over your kitchen. The only difficult part of homemade marshmallows is making the individual marshmallows by spreading the whipped cream onto a cornstarch or powdered sugar coated pan. So I just put the whipped mix into a jar instead. I got a huge jar of organic gelatin on Amazon--I'm also going to make homemade gummy bears from fruit juice--grape, cherry, and pomegranate.

Sounds delicious!!

This recipe looks interesting. As a major chocoholic, I wonder what it would taste like if you used Dark cocoa, and semisweet or dark chocolate chips, instead of white chocolate. Hmmm!
Jessica says
Probably delicious!!!
