Pizza is such a favorite in our house that we make it at least once a week. Nothing compares to a homemade pizza! I always use my favorite pizza dough recipe and top it with this insanely delicious Italian pizza sauce followed by a shameful amount of mozzarella cheese.
This pizza sauce is also amazing used as a dipping sauce! I've made it to go with so many things including homemade stromboli, mozzarella sticks, bread sticks - seriously, you can use it for almost anything that calls for a delicious red dipping sauce!
Why you'll love this recipe
- EASY recipe. Comes together quick with no strange ingredients.
- Versatile: Use it as a sauce base for pizza or Stromboli or use it as a dipping sauce.
Ingredients needed for the best pizza sauce
This quick pizza sauce only requires a few pantry staples that I'm sure you already have in your kitchen!
- Garlic: Gives this sauce such a yummy flavor. I like a ton of garlic in my sauce!
- Tomato sauce: I use canned tomato sauce but you can feel free to use freshly
- Tomato paste: Helps to make the sauce nice and thick! Also adds more flavor since it is much more concentrated.
- Spices: Basil, oregano, onion powder, salt & pepper. Taste and adjust these spices to your liking.
- Sugar: I know it sounds like a weird addition but granulated sugar is an essential ingredient as it mellows out the acidity of the tomatoes. The sauce is less "tomato-ey" tasting by adding just a touch of sugar, if that makes sense! Just trust me.

My Parents came from Italy back in the sixties and opened 3 pizzerias in New York. Sadly after they sold the business, at the time I was in my teens I went to work for a few upper westside joints. Of course, the recipes vary from place to place, however, the main integrant was never, ever cook the pizza sauce. Yours has a little more than most but the flavor is there for a dipping sauce for calamari, motz sticks, calzones, etc... Respectfully, Joseph

Hi Jesica, not quite understand the ingredients (I'm used to grams), is it 1.28 oz which would be only 36 grams and would be too less or is it 128 oz which is over 3 kg and seems to be too much? A bit confused...
Denise says
It is one 28-ounce can.

Would this work as a marinara sauce for pasta as well?
